Sprouts give us a quick boost!
Adding sprouted seeds to our diet gives us a real boost.
As seeds begin to sprout, the content of the nutrients increases with proteins, vitamins, enzymes and minerals increasing up to 1200%.
In addition, the nutrients also begin to break down into their simpler forms. For example proteins begin their breakdown into amino acids and the fats into fatty acids which saves our digestive process from having to do it! They are referred to as pre-digested food.
The seeds need to be soaked from 6-12 hours and can then be germinated, some until a small tail appears out of the seed. This takes about 1-3 days. Others can be germinated for longer until a shoot appears that is anything from 5 -15 cms tall.
A jam jar with a a mesh top (old tights and an elastic band) or a proper sprouting tray can be used to grow your sprouts. Regular rinsing at least twice a day is essential. Sprouting a couple of seeds together, like alfalfa and clover, can provide a more interesting taste . After rinsing, turn the jar upside down at an angle of about 60 degrees to keep the seeds drained (a washing up drainer works well). When the seeds have germinated enough they can be kept in the fridge for a few days if necessary.
A small handful of sprouts on top of your salad, in your smoothie or alongside any savoury dish provides lots more goodness and little effort.
